Canada’s biggest and most prestigious contest returned for another year, but bringing the event forward to June produced a smaller attendance- although the quality of skating was unaffected.
The amateur contest continued to be nothing short of a Montreal showcase demo with the locals taking full advantage of hours of practise to comfortably own the top spots… Respect to Max Free, Kevin Lapierre and Dan Millar who stood out for me. (Cont’d. after video)

The Pro contest -despite a smaller turnout than previous years- was as tense as always. Jerry Butler pushing through exhaustion to throw down some of the biggest stunts capable in such a challenging park; Adrien Anne was style personified with relaxed butter-smooth switchups and a flawless zero fish down the big grindbox.
Franco Cammayo is a force of nature! Having taken a brutal fall halfway through the final (so bad it warranted the music being turned off and silence falling on the park) he pulled himself back up and carried on as if he didn’t just dent the floor with his back. Roman Abrate was smooth and showed off natural spins to fakie switch spins into grinds… mental. Chris Haffey did Haffey, turned up and killed it with his first trick- fullcab true soul to fullcab out. Everything he did was flawless. It was great to see him landing tricks first time that last year took him five or six attempts and shows just how much at the top of his game he continues to be… he deserved the win.

Finally; A massive thank you and congratulations to Stephane Julien and Marie-France Denoncourt, who were married on the day of the Classic but still were kind enough to let us stay at their house!

Montreal Classic rocked.

Greetings again dear reader!

This month has been a little more relaxed after the initial wave of summer excitement has passed and the Brampton contest has been safely put to bed for another year. Dan Lefebre’s camerawork blows my mind with each new edit; every month he manages to outdo himself and I for one am grateful for his efforts. Cheers Dan, you do good work.

This month Hans and Dan got to test out their new k2 skates and we were blessed with visits from our Montreal brothers in arms Stephane Julien and Mathieu Ledoux who took some time out from being full-time professional ninjas to shred the Hoof. Here’s a toast to more summer blading and the impending arrival of the MONTREAL CLASSIC later this month! Big things my friends.

Erik Burrow is completely addicted to his Flip Video camera, which works in our favour as he’s always got another edit in the pipeline. Here’s his latest edit which features skating from Andrew Boyle, Erik Burrow, Aaron Wheat, Dan Lefebre, Taylor Ritchie, Marc Benic, Guy Crawford, Stephane Julien and AJ Delong. Cool stuff in this edit- Dan shredding coping like a pro, Stephane having the most energy of anyone I’ve ever met; Marc getting a sly clip (can’t wait to see more) and AJ rolling the Hoof in rec frames with 101mm wheels!

Its been a week, but its been worth every second of the wait. I happen to believe that the people I skate and hang out with are the coolest people on the planet, so I love that we’re taking representation seriously- I mean, have you seen the quality of the footage in this edit? Of course not, you’re probably reading this first, and good for you. Take my word for it, its going to blow the top of your mind off and possibly even leave you with some permanent damage.

Dan Lefebre is filming on a Canon 5d Mk2 using a combination of a 15mm fisheye lens and a 200mm lens and the results are breathtaking. Things you need to know about the event- Nick Wood handled the BBQ like a champ; We (well, Steve Kiley, but we were there in spirit) built our own grindbox and it ROCKED the pants off of the event, completely stealing the focus from the rest of the park; Some dude cut his head open but kept on skating regardless and Max Free hammered the biggest, gnarliest step up gap in the park… but I don’t know where the footage is.

Nonetheless- here’s Dan Lefebre’s latest HD edit, I hope you enjoy it, thanks to Dan for putting in work and thanks again to REMZ,
SHOP TASK, STREET ARTIST and VIBRALUX for their love and support, Brampton City Council for the clearance to use the park and DAVE GHENT for running the show. Can’t wait for next year! You can see a recap of the event up at Be-Mag as well.

With the outlook showing clear, bright but cold we set out early from Toronto for a day of excitement. Cambridge bowl has recently been completed so having googlemapped it, we wanted to check it out.

Review: Fun, but ultimately far too small to be much of a session. If the bowl had the same layout but was twice the size or depth, it’d be incredible! As it stands we tired of its tight transitions quickly and moved on to Kitchener. Taylor laced a mental trick I’m sure we’ll see at some point, Dan landed a topsoul to true topsoul, landing by rolling down a crazy bank and I did the same with a true top porn.

We hit a few other places including the legendary Guelph ledge, before ending up in Milton to wind down… and lots of our friends were there! The most rollerbladers in that park in a long time. A great day indeed, I hope you enjoy the photos, hover for picture details.

I think we may be on the cusp of a vert revival in Toronto, despite the bad timing- I give it two weeks before its the weather is too nice to be skating indoors any longer! Tonight we met Ivan from Bulgaria, who almost but not quite convinced me to jump out of a plane for fun. I sense my heart going into conniptions at the very thought of it. NOW BACK TO VERT- Alex is learning inverts! And is super close to getting a palm on the coping, next session for sure. Stu was silky as always with zerospin switch mistrials and Brayden was a trooper, taking the time to find his vert legs and getting some decent height out of it. Thanks to Nate, CJ’s may be becoming bearable.
